Midpoint Reflection — Post 2
I am currently six weeks into my internship with the US Department of State for Sudan and South Sudan, based in Washington, D.C. This experience has been both challenging and rewarding, offering me a deeper understanding of international relations and the complexities involved in diplomacy. My primary responsibilities include researching and drafting reports on the political and humanitarian situation in Sudan and South Sudan, attending briefings and meetings with senior officials, and assisting in the coordination of aid programs. One of my favorite moments so far was attending a high-level briefing with women activists from Sudan, where I had the opportunity to ask questions and gain insights on how these young women were making change within the atrocity. I participated in a project aimed at coordinating humanitarian aid and grant request for displaced persons in South Sudan and addressing food insecurity in South Sudan. With South Sudan facing 7.1 million people facing food insecurity due to Civil War and flooding. This experience was profoundly impactful as it highlighted the dire needs of vulnerable populations and the importance of timely and effective aid delivery. It reinforced my commitment to using my skills and knowledge to make a positive difference in the world.
My character was tested when I had to navigate a difficult briefing where I had to address 200+ colleagues and brief them on humanitarian situations on the ground. In this case I had a short amount of time to develop a presentation. I feared doing this task and almost overcame my decision to follow through with the task. In this instance, I upheld my values of respect and open-mindedness and adaptability. I took on the task and took time at home to do additional research to ensure that my project was able to be presented and adequately briefed. I have experienced significant transformative growth in terms of my confidence and professional skills. This internship has broadened my perspective on global issues and reinforced my commitment to pursuing my career. Most importantly, it has shown me the impact of diplomacy in futuring democracy and supporting lives.
Managing my time has been a learning process. I’ve developed a routine that balances work responsibilities with personal exploration and enjoyment. Taking time to explore D.C. and connect with other interns has been essential for maintaining my well-being and staying motivated. To effectively manage my service project I have extended my time here at DC to be able to address food insecurities within the city of D.C. The diplomatic skills that I have gained in the Department of State will be a shining light to implement my own project domestically.
Pre-Departure Reflection — Post 1
This summer I will be interning in the Department of State in the Bureau of African Affairs in the Office of Sudan and South Sudan from May to July. I also, want to host my own awareness campaign on the food insecurity in the DC area. Reflecting My primary objective includes getting a hands-on experience in international diplomacy, expanding my knowledge on human rights issues, and making a meaningful impact through my service project. Reflecting on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan and South Sudan has evoked a profound sense of urgency to addressing the conflict, displacement and instability going on in this region. I have found research expanding on the dire food insecurity occurring in this region and how so many regions including the US are facing similar issues. I could not ignore the parallels between the struggles faced in the DC Metro Area to the vulnerable communities in Sudan and South Sudan. The issues of poverty, displacement and lack of nutritious foods to specific populations.
This experience is crucial for my personal and professional growth as it aligns with my passion for global issues and advocacy. It will provide me the with valuable insights into diplomacy and human rights with office experience and grassroots initiates in my own community. I hope that I contribute to a broader conversation about social justice, equity and recognizing the interconnectedness of global humanitarian crises. I am most nervous about potentially being overwhelmed with taking on this project as well as completing my internship. However, I believe that the passion that I have as well as proper time-management can further prepare me to accomplish my goals and help those in need. With all other challenges, I must keep myself grounded and organized to support me and keep my goals at the forefront of my summer experience. Reflecting on past experiences in leadership roles and community engagement, I believe my communication skills, adaptability and resilience will help me succeed in this endeavor.
While in Washington D.C., I plan to immerse myself in the culture and environment by attending cultural events, exploring historical landmarks and actively engaging in the local community. Understanding the context in which I'm working in will enhance my overall experience. Specifically. I hope that this will enhance my communication skills and overall awareness of the communities around me and an international scale. Coming back to Chapel Hill, I hope to run educational series on international conflicts and the humanitarian conflicts that are occurring within the region. While also having a focus on efforts that can be done in our own community. I think that partnerships with local banks and centers like the Mariam Cheek Jackson Center. I'm excited to not just make my impact on the world but also my local community.
